Galatians 5:22-23 Young’s Literal Translation (YLT)
“And the fruit of the Spirit is: Love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law; and those who are Christ’s, the flesh did crucify with the affections, and the desires; if we may live in the Spirit, in the Spirit also we may walk; let us not become vain-glorious — one another provoking, one another envying!”
We can also think of moderation as self-control. Many of us have certain areas of our lives where we wish we had more self-control. For some of us it may be anger, lust, eating, gossiping, promiscuity, etc… This is the final fruit of the Spirit listed in this scripture. Just because it is the last mentioned doesn’t mean that it is least important. In fact, it is one of first i think of whenever i reference the fruits of the Spirit.
The Greek word used in Galatians for temperance is enkrateia, which translates to self-mastery or self-control. So, what does this look like? A person who demonstrates temperance is not run by their emotions and desires. They do not act on whims based on a desire. A person with self-control (temperance) is slow to act when he/she is overcome with emotion. They can reign themselves in when filled with passion and do not let themselves go at a whim.
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you are calm and able to make wiser decisions without being run by your emotions. You don’t jump up and react out of anger as soon as something upsetting happens. You’re able to demonstrate self-control and think of how God would want you to react in a situation.
The more you practice temperance in your life, the more clear the answers to your problems or questions will become. You will not make rash decisions out of emotion or desire. You will gain wisdom through giving God the time to speak to you in His way. What a blessing that is, right?
