Are you with me here???
Sometimes we as humans act like God is this magical being sitting in the sky waiting to grant our every wish. When He doesn’t do this, we get upset and disappointed. Maybe then we turn on Him or speak against Him. Maybe we just lose faith.
Now, some would say that the bible has scriptures saying we can have everything we want. They may even cite scriptures such as,
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you…”
Well, we need to remember that we cannot pick and choose which verses from the bible we follow. If you’re going to read a verse like this, then read it in context. Read all of the verses surrounding it and really dig deep into what they are actually saying. Look at the time periods and things going on then. Just looking into verse 8 of this scripture gives us context to help us out.
“7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”
Everything we do in life and all of our goals should be for the glory of God. We need to make sure that God is the center of all of our decisions to ensure that we are seeking righteous things for our lives.
That’s what this verse is telling us. The first thing it says is, “If you remain in me and my words…” right off the bat. We need to remain in God and the bible and then because we are seeking holy and righteous things, He will do “whatever you wish” for you.
Furthermore, according to verse eight all of this is done to the glory of God. It is so we will bear fruit (be fruitful/abundant) and stand as obvious disciples/followers of Christ. Do you remember when we went over the Fruit of the Spirit bible study series on my blog recently? (Click the link above to be taken to the first intro post to that series. There is a different post covering in depth study on each of the fruits of the Spirit.)
God wants us to crave more of Him and His holiness in our lives. When we are seeking Him and His goodness in our lives, He will provide it. In turn, we will produce the Fruits of the Spirit in our lives to show we are Christ’s followers such as: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, TEMPERANCE, GRACE, FAITH, MEEKNESS, KINDNESS, and PATIENCE.
It’s like when Peter Pan says you can fly if you just believe enough…Don’t go jumping off any buildings just yet. Remember when Satan tried to tempt Jesus into throwing himself from the cliff because of the promises made in Psalm 91?
And what did Jesus tell Satan in response?
“ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.“
