Matthew 11:28 “Come to me…I will give you rest.”
It’s super important in our Christian walk to make time for rest. In fact, God commands it. He asks us to keep the Sabbath and do no work. Even God took a day to rest after creating all that we know.
Genesis 2:2 NIV
” By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.”
That should tell us that rest is important to God. We are not meant to run wide open 24/7 without any down time. That’s why our immune systems get run down and we get sick. It’s our body’s way of screaming out for us to slow down and take a break.
Exodus 20:8-10 NIV
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.”
Here God commands us to keep the Sabbath day holy by resting and not doing any work. Now, some will argue that in the New Testament Jesus tells us that some things are necessary like caring for our animals which are in need.
Matthew 12:11-12 NIV “
He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
And I fully agree with this. I’m not really talking so much about the Sabbath right now as finding time to rest and the importance of rest for your physical and spiritual health.
Mark 6:31 NIV
“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
Here, the disciples had been working so hard teaching and spreading the gospel that Jesus insisted that they take time away to a QUIET PLACE and GET SOME REST. Why would quiet and rest be important to Jesus at a time like that? Because it is IMPORTANT to God that we find peace and rest on a regular basis in between all of our works, so that we can regenerate and strengthen our connection with Him. So, we will stay strong and not grow weary in our works.
Psalm 46:10 NIV
“…Be still and know that I am God…”
Mark 1:35 NIV
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
Luke 5:16 NIV
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”
Even Christ made time to find solitude and quiet to rest and spend time alone with God. Spending time with God is never taxing on your body or spirit. It’s just the opposite. It’s like charging your internal battery to become more refreshed. Jesus made time all throughout his ministry to break away somewhere alone and spend time with the Father.
We should follow in his example and make time to ourselves where it is quiet and we can focus solely on God. Pray and just rest in His presence. You will be amazed at the difference it makes in your life!
